Cartier-Bresson, notoriously shy about having his picture taken, complied–but with a caveat. “He asked me not to publish the picture,” says Stern, who put the contacts from the shoot away and forgot them. “Now, after 40 years, I don’t think Cartier-Bresson will mind.”
